The incident occurred on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Investigators stated that one line of inquiry suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Site of the Incident

Personnel have been sent to the location, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the metropolis.

Media coverage state the detonation happened in a parking area adjacent to a residential building.

Series of Incidents

Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.

This most recent event follows other serious incidents, for instance:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a explosive placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a Ukrainian source earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of official stance.

Hostilities has witnessed covert operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
