Transition Stateside Her appointment follows the departure of Albertin Montoya, who was at the helm of the California club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya had revealed in September his intention to depart at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC end up 13th in the 14-team standings. “My time with the FA has been incredible my time with the FA,” stated Coates. “It has helped shape me both on and off the pitch. This feels like the right moment to test my abilities in a new environment.” Coaching Pedigree Since taking charge in 2023, Coates guided the England U23s through matches including a narrow win over Norway in the continental competition and a high-scoring loss to the United States. Making the move alongside her to the NWSL is her former Lionesses staff member, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the Women’s Super League. The club's chief executive, a former FA women’s technical director, praised Coates's qualifications: “Emma is not only an superb manager, but she also has a demonstrated history of elevating athletes to thrive domestically and internationally.” “Coates excels at leading of squads and building ethos and has the strategic outlook we were searching for,” added Cossington. Bay FC's Journey Bay FC had a contrasting start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its inaugural campaign before facing difficulties to a 13th-place finish in 2025. Gavin Step, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the departing duo: “We thank Emma and Gemma for their service and wish them all the best with their new challenge. They have played a crucial part in fortifying the pipeline between the young Lionesses and the first team.” “Together, they have directly impacted the development of many young players who have gone on to become senior Lionesses,” he finished. Player Progression Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has overseen the rise of several players to the England senior side, including midfielder Lucia Kendall—who netted her debut Lionesses goal—and forwards Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones. Discussions for successors to fill the roles has begun, as the FA looks to continue the progress of the Women’s Under-23s setup in the future.
