Exploring the Globe's Spookiest Woodland: Gnarled Trees, Unidentified Flying Objects and Eerie Tales in Romania's Legendary Region.

"They call this spot an enigmatic zone of Transylvania," states a tour guide, his exhalation producing wisps of condensation in the crisp evening air. "Numerous people have gone missing here, it's thought there's a gateway to a different realm." Marius is escorting a traveler on a nocturnal tour through frequently labeled as the globe's spookiest woodland: Hoia-Baciu, an area covering one square mile of primeval native woodland on the outskirts of the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Hundreds of Years of Enigma

Accounts of strange happenings here extend back centuries – the grove is titled for a regional herder who is said to have vanished in the long ago, along with his entire flock. But Hoia-Baciu achieved international attention in 1968, when a defense worker named Emil Barnea took a picture of what he claimed was a UFO floating above a circular clearing in the heart of the forest.

Countless ventured inside and never came out. But don't worry," he states, turning to the visitor with a smirk. "Our guided walks have a perfect safety record."

In the years that followed, Hoia-Baciu has brought in yoga practitioners, traditional medicine people, ufologists and ghost hunters from worldwide, interested in encountering the unusual forces said to echo through the forest.

Modern Threats

It may be a top global hotspots for lovers of the paranormal, the grove is under threat. The western suburbs of Cluj-Napoca – a contemporary technology center of over 400,000 residents, called the tech capital of Eastern Europe – are expanding, and real estate firms are advocating for authorization to cut down the woods to erect housing complexes.

Aside from a small area housing locally rare Mediterranean oak trees, this woodland is lacking legal protection, but Marius hopes that the company he helped establish – a dedicated preservation group – will contribute to improving the situation, motivating the local administrators to appreciate the forest's significance as a tourist attraction.

Spooky Experiences

When small sticks and seasonal debris break and crackle beneath their boots, the guide tells some of the folk tales and claimed paranormal happenings here.

  • One famous story recounts a little girl going missing during a group gathering, later to return five years later with complete amnesia of her experience, without aging a day, her attire without the tiniest bit of dirt.
  • More common reports describe cellphones and camera equipment inexplicably shutting down on entering the woods.
  • Emotional responses include complete terror to moments of euphoria.
  • Certain individuals report seeing bizarre skin irritations on their skin, perceiving disembodied whispers through the woodland, or experience hands grabbing them, despite being convinced they're by themselves.

Study Attempts

Although numerous of the stories may be impossible to confirm, there is much before my eyes that is undeniably strange. All around are vegetation whose bases are bent and twisted into fantastical shapes.

Multiple explanations have been given to explain the misshapen plants: that hurricane winds could have shaped the young trees, or inherently elevated electromagnetic fields in the earth account for their strange formation.

But research studies have found inconclusive results.

The Famous Clearing

The guide's tours enable guests to participate in a modest investigation of their own. Upon reaching the meadow in the woods where Barnea photographed his renowned UFO images, he gives his guest an electromagnetic field detector which registers energy patterns.

"We're stepping into the most powerful section of the forest," he says. "See what you can find."

The trees immediately cease as the group enters into a perfect circle. The sole vegetation is the low vegetation beneath the ground; it's obvious that it's not maintained, and appears that this bizarre meadow is organic, not the creation of landscaping.

The Blurred Line

The broader region is a place which fuels fantasy, where the border is blurred between truth and myth. In rural Romanian communities faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") – undead, shapeshifting bloodsuckers, who emerge from tombs to frighten local communities.

The famous author's renowned character Dracula is permanently linked with Transylvania, and Bran Castle – a medieval building perched on a cliff edge in the Transylvanian Alps – is actively advertised as "the count's residence".

But despite folklore-rich Transylvania – actually, "the land past the woods" – appears real and understandable compared to these eerie woods, which appear to be, for reasons related to radiation, climatic or purely mythical, a nexus for human imaginative power.

"Within this forest," Marius says, "the division between reality and imagination is extremely fine."
