Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.

A senior delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The official said the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Future administration of the region

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to heal," she continued.

Near the leader's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population desire the war to end in exchange for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and locality districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night comes, the dread appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the south region of the city said two more victims had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, medics reported.
