Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, known as Person A, testified that people concerned by the information breach were instructed to move homes and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are investigating the Conservative government's response of a serious disclosure of private information involving almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to escape militant rule.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet with confidential details, such as names, phone numbers and sometimes relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker stationed at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak came to light only in August 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to settle in the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers lack comparable resources that we have,” she told MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can locate your precise location. That is what specialized teams did.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty kin and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A superinjunction concerning the incident was implemented in August 2023 and blocked all details about it from being made public until July 2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with told affected households they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they change residence when possible and switched their phone numbers. These represented the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation carried out by a former official had been mistaken to state that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not confronting the authorities; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

Person A described horrific abuse experienced by concerned people, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to force the family to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
