A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
