What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as ā€œvivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting othersā€.

ā€œHow can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?ā€ a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. ā€œHe pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,ā€ she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

ā€œThis low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,ā€ the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an ā€œutter carnage,ā€ but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a ā€œstroke of luckā€ he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to ā€œdozens and dozensā€ of gunshots.

ā€œI thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,ā€ he explained. ā€œI’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.ā€
