During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the key to defeating him for good. Heads Up: The following contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season. A Journey Into the Tunnel Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage. They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing. Like many elements of the final season, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the stage play The First Shadow. A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition. That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials. The Briefcase's Contents Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab. Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2. The Power of Fear The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself. Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
