Females are uniting behind acclaimed star Zeta-Jones after she encountered disparaging remarks on social media over her appearance at a recent red carpet event.

She appeared at a promotional function in Los Angeles recently where a social media clip discussing her part in the new series of the 'Wednesday' show was overshadowed because of remarks about her appearance.

Voices of Support

This year's Miss Great Britain Classic winner, Laura White, described the online criticism "absolute rubbish", adding that "men aren't given such a timeline which women face".

"Men don't have this sell-by/use-by date imposed on women," argued Laura White.

Author aged 50, Sali Hughes, said unlike men, females are criticized as they age and the actor deserves to be at liberty to appear however she liked.

The Social Media Storm

During the interview, uploaded to social media and attracted over 2.5 million views, Zeta-Jones, originally from Mumbles, Swansea, discussed her enjoyment in portraying her character, the Addams Family matriarch, in the new episodes.

However many of the online responses focused on her age and were disparaging towards her looks.

The negative remarks triggered significant support for Zeta-Jones, including a widely-shared clip from a social media user which said: "There is criticism for women when they get cosmetic procedures and attack them for not having sufficient procedures."

Others also came to her defence, as one put it: "She is aging naturally and she is beautiful."

Some called her as "beautiful" and "so pretty", and one comment read that "she looks her age - that is reality."

A Statement Arrival

Ms White appeared without cosmetics for her interview to "prove a point".

Ms White arrived on air recently with a bare face as a demonstration and to highlight there was no set "template" for what a woman of a certain age ought to appear.

Like many women of her years, she explained she "maintains her wellbeing" not to appear younger but in order to feel "better" and appear "vibrant".

"Ageing is a gift and if we can age gracefully, this is what truly counts," she continued.

She contended that men were not judged by the same appearance ideals, adding "nobody scrutinizes the age of famous men might be - they only appear 'wonderful'."

She said this was a key factor behind her participation in the competition the classic category, in order to demonstrate that midlife women are still here" and "possess it".

Unfair Scrutiny

The beauty writer discussing beauty norms
Welsh author and commentator Sali Hughes argues women are consistently and unjustly judged as they grow older.

The author, an author and presenter from Wales, said that although Zeta-Jones was "gorgeous" this is "not the point", stating further she ought to be at liberty to appear in any way she chooses absent her years coming under examination.

She stated the online abuse proved not a single woman is "immune" and that females should not face the "constant narrative" that they are not good enough or young enough - an issue that is "maddening, irrespective of the person involved".

Questioned on whether males encounter the same scrutiny, she responded "no, never", explaining females are criticized merely for showing "audacity" to be present online while aging.

A Double Bind

Regardless of the beauty industry promoting "age-defiance", the author stated females are still criticised whether they aged naturally or underwent treatments including cosmetic surgery or fillers.

"If you age without intervention, commenters state you should do more; when you have treatments, you are criticized for trying too hard," she remarked further.
